The population of Arizona went from 5,166,697 to 6,553,255 from 2000 to 2012 for a total growth of 1,386,558. The population of the United States for that same time period went from 282,171,957 to 313,914,040 for a total population growth of 31,742,083. Arizona had a total percentage growth for those 12 years of 26.8 percent which was greater than the overall United States total percentage growth which was 11.2 over those same years. The trends of growth for both the United States and Arizona can be seen on the graph below. The graph which is logarithmic indicates that although the growth was faster for Arizona than the United States for the years 2000 to 2009 it was slower for the years 2009 to 2012. The race percentages for Arizona have changed some from 2000 to 2012. The percentage of the population of white only has decreased from 64.0 to 57.1. The percent of the black only population has only increased from 3.0 to 3.9. The percent of population of hispanic / mixed has increased from 25.4% to 30.2% and other/mixed races have increased from 7.6% to 8.9%.
*Hispanics are technically not considered a race but rather an ethnicity.
